Express Your Attitude Through Your Style || Guest Post

Back in 2012, Dr. Jennifer Baumgartner published a book titled: You Are What You Wear: What Your Clothes Reveal About You, and it got quite a lot of publicity. While I personally may not agree with the statement that clothes express who I really am, I can’t deny that they probably tell a lot about me to a careful observer. The clothes you wear reflect your habits, ambitions, and emotions, as well as your job and income. Still, we can use fashion language to express ourselves through clothes and show the world what we’re passionate about.

Graphic tees

What I personally love about graphic tees is the fact that they are so incredibly versatile. They can be paired with a pair of jeans for a school outfit or combined with a formal jacket for a business-casual look. They can be used to show all your loves and interests: witty comments, references to a particular fandom, your favourite superhero or a Disney princess… They can be modest and inconspicuous or very provocative and eye-catching, and those are just some of the reasons people of every age love them so much.

Edgy pieces

The beauty of having that edgy part in you is that you can express it in the most subtle ways: chunky pieces of jewellery, dark makeup, leather clothes... Sometimes you just can’t resist showing your edginess: wearing a black leather jacket, classic Doc Martens boots with the trademark stitching, and Ray-Ban sunglasses. Adding edgy pieces to your everyday look is a great way to express your love for punk, rock, or heavy metal music, or perhaps bike or gothic culture. There is this wrong belief that people who wear all-black are always sad or angry; in reality, it’s probably the way they express their love for alternative culture or music.

Feminine and elegant

There are days when I feel like spending an entire day in my PJs, yet there are days when I leave my home dressed-up like I’m a celebrity on my way to a premiere. This year’s Oscars once more showed that elegance and femininity never go out of style, and that you don’t have to blindly follow trends to look amazing. You should always have a couple of high-quality, timeless pieces in your wardrobe for days when you feel like channelling your inner goddess: little black dress of soft satin, professional-looking wool coat with thinsulate lining, leather bag, and a pair of designer sunglasses that complement the shape of your face. Top that off with an elegant sleek bun and bright red lipstick, and you will look like you stepped out of a movie.

Girly-girl

Sometimes there are days when you feel like a little girl again - restless and cheerful. One of the easiest ways to show your attitude to the world is to wear so-called girly-girl clothes: light, flowy dresses, sandals, lace skirts, glittery flats, and silk blouses. It doesn’t necessarily have to be all-pink. It’s more about the overall message you’d be sending: you are girly and glam. The right accessories will make even a ‘tomboy’ outfit girly in a blink of an eye: wear cute, colourful jewellery, floral-print handbags, or the ever-popular flower crowns.
It’s important to remember that nothing you choose to wear has to reflect anything other than your interests and your current state of mind. Just because there comes a time when you feel like wearing sandals and skirts, it doesn’t mean that you have to give up on wearing jeans and leather jackets altogether. Stay true to yourself, experiment with different styles, and follow trends if you like them, but try to create your own style which will reflect who you really are.
