Book Review: White Lies by Ellie Holmes*

Have you ever told a white lie?

Sam Davenport is a woman who lives her life by the rules. When her husband Neil breaks those rules too many times, Sam is left wondering not only if he is still the man for her but also if it's time to break a few rules of her own.

Actions, however, have consequences as Sam soon discovers when what starts out as an innocent white lie threatens to send her world spiralling out of control.

White Lies, by Ellie Holmes, isn't the sort of book I'd usually pick out for myself. But when I was kindly sent a copy to review; I got stuck in. I've said this before, but I'll say it again, it really pays to step outside of your comfort zone sometimes. Because, in stepping outside of my comfort zone with White Lies, I found a fantastic book, and a new favourite author.

I've never read a book so heavy...and yes, I mean physically heavy. It's only 464 pages, and paperback, but it weighs more than some of the hardback books in my collection! It must be the type of paper. Reading White Lies is definitely a workout for the arms; especially if you like to read led down, holding the book up above your face. Whatever you do, don't drop this book on your face. It'll hurt. Not that I did that, of course...

I'll happily put up with a book this heavy if it means reading such a fantastic piece of literature though. I was expecting a love story (which I'm not usually a huge fan of) but what I got was really much more of a thriller. The story-line was a little predictable; I was always one step ahead of the story. But that didn't take away the excitement, or the thrill, of reading each chapter and seeing the characters finding out what you already knew; sometimes with disastrous, even deadly, consequences. I can't even complain about the happy ending; because Sam Davenport more than deserved it. There were plenty of tumultuous moments throughout the novel leading up to that happy ending to keep even the most cynical of people satisfied! Overall? A fantastic, if unexpectedly so, novel. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for future novels from Ellie Holmes!

You can buy White Lies on Amazon.
