Sleep Well* || With Benenox

There's not a chance in hell of opening a box in this house without the cat wanting to get involved. He was mostly interested in the pink string, and was soon running around with a piece in his mouth! Anyway, shall we move on to what this post is really about? Nope, sorry, it's not about cats...

Today I'm talking about sleep. Totally wrote cats there first, didn't I? Cats rule everything around me, sorry. And, in fact, when we bought Harley home (two plus years ago now), he was the reason we couldn't get any sleep! He liked to be fed at 3am, every. freaking. morning. And he would run around, knock things over, and just generally make a racket until I got up to feed him. Honestly? It was like having a new-born baby to care for in some ways!

Two years on, though, and I'm still not very good at sleeping. A basic human need, instinct even, and I'm no good at it. Oh, the irony. The problem's I have with sleep are many and varied; from a snoring husband, to not being able to switch all my thoughts of at night. I'm a notoriously light sleeper; the slightest movement or noise and I'm awake. And I'll be the first to admit that when that alarm goes off in the morning? I hit the snooze button at least two, sometimes three plus, times.

It's believed we spend a third of our lives sleeping, on average, and that sleep is a fundamental biological process that helps the body to repair and recover overnight. And yet many of us, even after eight hours sleep, still feel exhausted and unable to function the next day. It turns out, simply getting eight hours sleep a night may not be enough for our bodies to carry out the complex restorative functions they perform overnight. In fact, the quantity of sleep we get matters not if we aren't getting the quality sleep that is required during the night-time hours.

Whilst it seems as though our body is resting, it is in fact very active. Particularly the brain, which needs a constant supply of energy throughout the night. The science behind it is this; the body uses energy in the form of glycogen, which is stored in the liver. These glycogen stores deplete overnight at a rate of 10g per hour, of which 65% is used by the brain. If this supply runs out, the liver sends stress signals to the brain in the form of hormone cortisol, which alerts the brain to wake up until sufficient levels of the glycogen are restored. It is this process that can result in broken sleep, which you may not even be aware of, but which can often leave you feeling tired and lacking in energy the next day.

I hope you're all finding this as interesting as I am!

So, despite good quality sleep being essential for cognitive function, general health and wellbeing, an estimated 80% of Brits struggle with sleep and an average are waking up three times during the night. When it comes to sleep, quality really is just as important as quantity, and ensuring you have enough of both will impact how well you can perform the following day, as well as having a greater impact on your health longer term. Sleep, for many, comes at the bottom of our list of priorities. However, at a time when more people than ever are juggling busy careers with hectic family lives, failure to prioritise something so simple as sleep can quickly lead to burnout.

Now, NEW Benenox Overnight Recharge is coming to the rescue of all us sleep-poor with their extraordinary night time mind fuel for everyone who struggles with disrupted sleep, tiredness, low energy and concentration levels the following day.

Benenox Overnight Recharge is a combination of honey, Sustamine and Vitamin B6 which, when taken before bed, supplements your body's stored energy levels to support good quality sleep, leaving you feeling fully recharged and ready to take on the day ahead. The blend of ingredients in Benenox Overnight Recharge helps to:

  • Reduce tiredness and fatigue
  • Support your mental function
  • Maintain normal energy production

Honey is well known for its health benefits and its mix of natural sugars is believed to help boost glycogen stores in the liver to use overnight.

Sustamine is a combination of two amino acids, L-Alanine and L-Glutamine, which help the liver to store glycogen by slowing absorption of honey in the stomach.

Vitamin B6 has been shown to reduce tiredness and fatigue while supporting psychological function, helping you feel more energised so you can perform at your best.

In trials, 81% of 140 patients were pleased with the results. Of those 140 patients, 75% agreed that their quality of sleep was better, and 64% agreed/strongly agreed that they felt less tired in the morning. Furthermore, 76% of 140 patients stated their ability to concentrate, as well as their effectiveness at work/study/other activities, was better.

Benenox have challenged me to put their new food supplement sleep aid to the test, using their two week sleep tracker. In week one, I'll be tracking my sleep quality and energy levels as normal and in week two, I'll be tracking the same while using Benenox Overnight Recharge. I'll then be comparing my results to see if Benenox Overnight Recharge really does provide you with a better night's sleep. And I'll be reporting back on my results in a separate blog post!

If you're interested in trying Benenox Overnight Recharge for yourself, you can find the vegetarian friendly food supplement in two flavours including fruity Blackcurrant and zesty Lemon and Ginger. It's stocked in Tesco and on Amazon, priced at £12.49 for 135ml. Further information here.
