Elf will always be number one on my list of favourite Christmas movies. Honestly, I could watch this film every day for the whole month of December and never get sick of it. I was absolutely gutted when I found out it wasn't going to be aired on terrestrial TV one year (and we didn't have Sky at the time) so I went out and bought it on DVD so now I can watch it whenever I want. And believe me, I do! In my opinion, it's just the best Christmas film.
Plot: "After discovering he is a human, a man raised as an elf at the North Pole decides to travel to New York City to locate his real father."
I can't believe I'd never seen this film before I met my husband. Tim Allen is a comedy genius and plays the role of a hapless Santa fantastically. The best films, in my opinion, are those that find the balance between riotously funny and a little bit emotional which is something The Santa Clause nails. But don't worry, it's a Disney film, so of course it has a happy ending.
Plot: "By helping Santa Claus with a Christmas crisis, Scott finds he's inadvertently agreed to become the next Santa Claus. Now he has to deal with a suspicious ex-wife while trying to keep his secret safe."
If you're not a fan of Home Alone then I'm afraid we can't be friends. This is not only one of my favourite Christmas movies, but one of my favourite movies of all time. Who would have thought a comedy about an eight-year-old boy being left home alone and having to fight off thieves intent on breaking into his home would be so funny? Comedy gold!
Plot: "Eight-year-old Kevin is accidentally left behind when his family leaves for France. At first, he is happy to be in charge, but when thieves try to break into his home, he has to put up a fight."
There's always a risk with sequels that they'll disappoint. And whilst I would highly recommend avoiding Home Alone 3, Home Alone 2 really delivers. Similar premise, more laughs, and the same comedy gold from Kevin McAllister. This is one sequel worth giving your time to.
Plot: "Kevin accidentally boards a flight to New York City and gets separated from his family who are on their way to Miami. He bumps into two of his old enemies who plan to rob a toy store."
My husband claims Die Hard is a Christmas movie because there's a Christmas tree and a Christmas jumper in the film. It's set at Christmas, therefore it must be a Christmas film. By that logic, Bridget Jones's Diary is also a Christmas film. And one of the best. Hilarious, emotional, a film that has us rooting for the underdog throughout. This is one I always dig out at Christmas.
Plot: "Bridget, a single woman, writes a diary which focuses on the things she wishes to happen in her life. However, her life changes when two men vie for her affection."
