Book Review - All The Missing Girls by Megan Miranda*

Megan Miranda's novel is made up of sex and secrets; friendships and betrayals. It tells the story of two young women who, ten years apart, mysteriously disappear. And, like hugely successful novel The Girl on the Train, All the Missing Girls is a nail-bitingly intense read.

I will admit to finding All the Missing Girls a little confusing. I've read countless books that jump around in time, but none that tell the story completely in reverse. It's such an innovative and intriguing narrative twist. The story gains momentum through this reverse story-telling; as clues and information are slowly drip-feed to the reader. Each chapter reveals some new piece of the 'who dunnit' puzzle. And it's your desire to complete this puzzle; to uncover what really happened to those two young girls, that keeps you reading.

Confusion aside, and it is easy to set this aside after a few chapters as the story picks up pace and the mystery thickens, this is a very easy read. There's a lot going on, as Nic struggles with her father, the disappearance of her best friend, her ex, the memories being back home bring to the surface and the new disappearance of a girl she barely knew but is inextricably linked to. But there's never too much going on. You never feel overwhelmed, or unable to keep up. It's easy reading; the hard part is figuring out the ending.

The mark of any good murder mystery novel is, in my opinion, how much it gets you guessing as to who the culprit is. All the Missing Girls had me trying to work this out from the very start. But I don't think I could have come up with the ending if I'd written it myself! 

This is an absolutely breath-taking novel. It is like nothing you've ever read before, and I can see it being as big a success as The Girl on the Train. It's certainly deserving of it. And I can't wait to share this book with all my friends and family!
