Nowadays, it is way too easy to get sucked
into stress, exhaustion and basically doing things for others which we don’t
want to do, with the excuse that we can’t be selfish. Go ahead, be a little
selfish! Take a day off, take a vacation even. Show yourself some tender loving
care by making things about you for once, and don’t you dare feel guilty about
it.
1. Cut the Cord
What is the first thing that pops into your
head when you hear the word detox? A juice cleanse and
a retreat in the woods? Sure, but it can also mean switching off your phone and
going on a technology detox. It’s nice to be up to date on all the important
news, but sometimes the outside world can be way too loud and demanding. So go
ahead and turn it off, even if it’s just for a few hours to hear your own
thoughts.
2. Treat Yourself
I’m sure you’ve heard that many times
already, and it’s not for nothing. Every now and then, treat yourself to
something you don’t necessarily need, but want. Book a spa day. Go get a
manicure! If you can’t splurge so much financially, then buy a new colour of
nail-polish and do your nails yourself. To feel like you are at the spa, try
making a hydrating face mask at home, using
only natural ingredients. Do any kind of beauty treatment - your mind and body
will be thankful for it.
3. Detox Your
Body
Dieting is about listening to what your
body needs. Food can give you energy but it can also take it away, which is why
you need to be mindful about what you eat. For instance, certain foods which
are high in gluten can leave you feeling sluggish and sleepy. A lot of people
have recently started to discover that they are actually allergic to gluten.
However, even if you don’t have an obvious intolerance, you should still
consider trying some of the deliciously healthy choices out there as you will
no doubt benefit in more ways than one. The popularity of a gluten-free diet
has grown enormously in the past years because of its numerous health benefits
that affect everybody. Improved energy levels, less bloating and even less
anxiety are just some of the changes that follow after cutting gluten out.
4. Detox Your
Mind
Meditate. You don’t have to get down on the
ground and cross your legs like you see people doing in the movies. Place
yourself in a position that’s comfortable for you, relax your muscles one by
one and breathe. Remember breathing? The calming benefits of meditation are
quite magical. Not only will you relieve tension and reduce stress, but you
will also notice a generally more positive outlook on life. When you shut out
everything else, you give room to self-discovery. You might even fall in love -
with yourself.
5. Exercise
How can exercise be relaxing, you ask? Once you realise that the point of exercise is not just
to be able to fit into that new dress, the pressure will come off and it will
instantly become easier to do. Exercising should be about connecting your mind
and body through movement. When you are moving around and working out, your
heart rate increases which makes your brain releases endorphins - a natural
chemical which literally makes you happy. All you need to worry about is
finding an activity that works for you. You don’t have to run a terrifying
marathon, just try walking around your neighbourhood for starters.
6. Make Sleep a
Priority
The proper amount of sleep will maximise
your ability to do everything else. It increases productivity, improves athletic
performance and promotes immune function, to list just a few. Clear and modify
your sleeping space to be able to get the most out of it, but remember that
receiving that natural sunlight in the morning is just as important for your
rhythm.
