My Favourite Scary Books

Earlier this week, I shared my favourite scary movies. And I thought it appropriate to share my favourite scary books. Because some of us would prefer to curl up with a chilling read than a creepy film on All Hallows Eve. So here are my top picks. 

Warning. This book might put you off ever visiting Ikea again. A super creepy story told in a well-known setting that'll haunt you for a very long time. My mother-in-law read this book after me and still refuses to go to Ikea!

One of my all-time favourite reads, The Passage is more sci-fi than supernatural but still plenty scary. And it's a trilogy. So if you love the first book, there's more to read!

The Woman in Black is the classic English ghost story and was adapted for the screen with Daniel Radcliffe playing the leading role. The film was super creepy, and well worth a watch, but the book goes a step further. 

Now a Netflix series, You is the creepy story of a stalker turned killer. Or killer turned stalker. Delightfully tense, every page leaves you wanting more but also fearing what is to come.

Goosebumps might be geared towards a younger audience, but some of them are still pretty spooky and scary even to an older reader. And there's so many Goosebumps books to choose from, you're spoilt for choice. 

The Bloody Chamber is a creepy and unsettling collection of fairy-tale retellings that'll haunt you long after you turn the final page!

Edgar Allan Poe is the MASTER of horror. The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven and Annabel Lee are just three of my personal favourites from Poe's collection.

Stephen King is another master of horror. There's so many of his novels to choose from, but IT is one of his scariest in my opinion. I first read this when I was 13, and I'm convinced it's the reason I'm afraid of clowns now!

Ok, I couldn't just leave it at one Stephen King book. He's such a fantastic horror writer, after all. The Shining is another of his that I adore for it's creepy atmosphere and chills and thrills! The film's pretty good too.

An oldie but a goodie. You can never go wrong with a bit of Dracula. Bram Stoker created a classic horror with this one. After all, everyone knows Dracula, right?

And Mary Shelley created another classic horror with Frankenstein. Everyone knows who Frankenstein is. But even if you've already read the book, it's well worth a re-read this Halloween.
