The Self-Care Revolution

Self-care is something of a buzzword right now. Everyone is talking about it; what it is, why it's important and how you can practice it. It might seem like just a trend, what with all the hype around it, but it's actually a really important way to maintain good mental health. But with all of us leading such busy lives, it's something that seems to get overlooked by the majority. So today I thought I'd share my top five ways to practice self-care. And the good news is they are all really easy practices, with no expense or strenuous effort required. Because ugh, effort. Am I right?

1. Have a bath. I try to make time for a bath at least once a week. It's where I do my best relaxing. The best baths are accompanied by a Lush bath bomb or bubble bar, a glass of wine, candles and a good book. Which leads me on to my next suggestion.

2. Read a book. Losing yourself in another world can be just the antidote to a bad day. It doesn't even have to be a book. A magazine, a blog post (or two). As long as it transports you somewhere else, it's a good 'un!

3. Get plenty of sleep. This is one of the most basic self-care practices there is but one of the most important. Our bodies and minds need sleep to restore, repair and recharge. Without a good night's sleep everything feels more difficult!

4. Spend time with pets. I don't know about you, but I'm never calmer and more mindful than when I'm giving my cat a cuddle or even watching him play. I can completely lose myself in the present moment when my cat's around and that's no bad thing.

5. Sip a cup of tea. Another mindful exercise, and one that can be enjoyed anywhere and at any time. Sipping a freshly brewed, hot cup of tea can be a soul soothing self-care practice, in my experience at least.

How do you practice self-care?
